Many people are daunted by public speaking — especially in front of a room of people who they know well and meet often, but don’t fret – You might not need your own Geoffrey Rush/Lionel Logue to help you with your speech.

Here are a few tips;

How do I stop getting nervous?
The trick is; You won’t stop getting nervous. Even the best speakers don’t stop getting nervous. Politicians, Celebrities, Journalists – they all get nervous! Try to think of your speech in a different perspective. You’re not addressing the nation! Think of your speech as an anecdote and a toast with a larger than normal dinner-party.

How should I prepare?
Write your speech early! Practice as soon as you can. You don’t need to memorise every word, just know the general flow, the anecdotes you want to tell and the jokes you want to make. (Sometimes it’s best to be a little corny with the jokes. You don’t want to accidentally offend nana!)
If you’re most comfortable walking around whilst speaking, rather than standing behind a lectern; ask the venue and the MC beforehand if they can arrange for a radio microphone.

When should we do the speeches?
You can have the speeches at any time; but many couples find they work best before food is served, ubt after your guests have had a little time to socialise and have a few drinks.

Above all;
Be yourself. This is a great opportunity to say some things that mean a lot to you about people you care about, in front of all your friends and family. That’s not a chance people get very often, so make the most of it.

If you’re theming your wedding, it’s often best to choose something that you care deeply about for your theme. If you love the environment; perhaps you should consider changing your ‘White Wedding’ to a ‘Green Wedding’. That’s not a colour suggestion!

Because lifestyle choices and waste affects nature, you can plan ahead so that your wedding to uses sustainably produced and biodegradable goods and services.

First of all, think about the things used for your wedding are biodegradable. Try to find out what flowers are the most sustainably produced; without too much freight (and thus, CO² emissions) between the flower-farm and your wedding. You can use your creativity to achieve the best floral combination yet still take care of the environment.

If you’re providing wedding gifts to wedding attendants, think about long-term gifts. Instead of giving disposable plastic items; you might like to consider gifts made from steel or glass that can be re-used or re-cycled. You can give away different seeds or plants as natural wedding favors.

For your venue, you might prefer an outdoor venue instead of staying inside the building. In this way, you will be able to have natural venue that provides fresh air for everyone. There are a host of great outdoor wedding venues, from botanical gardens and beaches to vineyards. Having a ceremony and reception in the early morning and afternoon also means you’ll create less environmental drain by using less electricity for lights. If you’re looking for a starlit reception, you could always look for low-power drain lights like LEDs.

A lot of wedding suppliers are conscious of the environmental effects of their goods and services; so when you’re engaging a wedding planners, wedding florists, dressmakers and venues – tell them you want an environmentally friendly wedding, and they’ll let you know of what they can do to help.

It has to be said that although they are popular – Bachelor and Bachelorette parties aren’t everyone’s cup of tea!

If you and your partner are both uninterested in bachelor and bachelorette parties; why not consider a “Thank You” party for your bridesmaids and groomsmen?

Traditionally the Bridesmaid Luncheon is an event that focuses on the support and friendship that the bridal party shares during the preparation and organisation of a wedding. Some couples might enjoy a joint-luncheon of bridesmaids and groomsmen and some of your guests as a pre-wedding get-together.

It might seem daunting to bring together friends, relatives and associates who’ve never met – but it’s also a great way to introduce people, and perhaps building new friendships before the wedding date.

Usually wedding luncheons happen about a month before the wedding date, but if your guests are coming from far away, you may want to schedule the luncheon a few days before the wedding.
